Rolling Stone’s Unveils the Greatest Song in K-Pop History

A Korean pop song recently topped Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest songs in Korean music history.

Girls’ Generation’s “Gee,” released in 2009, took the top spot.

Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany says it’s not so much about a ‘first love story’ in the song’s intro as it is about how love — and all of its indescribable ecstasies — can be translated through pop music. In this enduring hit, every word is an onomatopoeic expression of joy, overflowing with rapidly repeated syllables. As a result, the song demonstrates aegyo’s dizzying, maximalist aesthetic.

The group had planned to release the lead single from their debut EP, “Dancing Queen,” as a response to Wonder Girls’ retro hit “Nobody.” When E-Tribe showed ‘Gee’ to the record label, they were told that the lyrics and melody were childish and weak.”

The song’s glittering Shibuya-kei synths continue to build, capturing how a crush can energize us. Thanks to E-Tribe, the song quickly took off, spawning the most viewed K-pop music video to that point (until Psy’s “Gangnam Style” ascended to the top in 2012).

The list also stated that “14 years after it came out, SNSD’s Gee still feels like a revelation.”

The members of Girls’ Generation are Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. A former member of the group, Jessica, left in 2014.

IU’s “Good Day” (#3), H.O.T.’s “Candy” (#3), BTS’s “Spring Day” (#4), Cho Yong Pil’s “Short Hair” (#5), Blackpink’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” (#6), BIGBANG’s “Haru Haru” (#7), 2NE1’s “I Am the Best” (#8), Seo Taiji and Boys’ “I Know” (#9), and Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me” (#10) round out the top 10.

Music journalists and critics who have written about Korean music for years developed this list.

According to Rolling Stone, “after an initial ballot vote and heated debates, we came up with a list that offers a broader history of Korean popular music rather than just K-pop as a hitmaking business.”
